Hailey C. is a beautiful person inside and out, a surgical technologist working at a hospital, and a 2007 grant recipient. She also serves on the The SAMFund’s grant review committee and describes the experience as “a source of pride that I can stay involved with this amazing organization.” She knows first-hand that the need is still great for young adult survivors: “I have been in their position, so it is very critical to me to take each one seriously and make sure people in need get help.”
After ten months of rigorous chemotherapy, radiation and finally a bone marrow transplant to treat Acute Myelogenous Leukemia, Hailey felt “blessed to have survived, but also lost and concerned about what my future held.” Setting a goal to change careers to the medical field and go back to school was a major decision for her, but she didn’t know where to turn. “Cancer wiped me out financially and I knew I needed help.”
After searching online, Hailey realized there weren’t many resources for young adult cancer survivors. When she found The SAMFund, her spirits were instantly lifted: “The SAMFund provided me with hope, and hope is what a young adult cancer survivor needs!” Then, she was ecstatic to be awarded a grant to pay for a semester of school and books. Empowered with the belief that she could make the transition, Hailey set off toward making her goal a reality.
Today, as a surgical technologist, she is able to show great compassion for her patients. As she describes her work, “I feel honored they have entrusted our surgical team with their life and am proud to advocate for my patients when they are facing a procedure.” She credits The SAMFund with “enabling her to be where she is today” and with inspiring her to organize a bone marrow drive and find donors for the National Marrow Donor Registry, but we humbly argue that her passion for helping others is a true instinct. Once she received a little support to follow her calling, Hailey simply moved forward on her path.
We’re so honored to have Hailey as part of The SAMFund family, and can’t wait to see what the future holds for her!
