“I realized a lot of things while I was immersed in our health care system. Being a full time patient, I did not have an advocate working on my behalf and I therefore had to be my own spokesperson. I had to fight with insurance companies for procedures that meant the difference between life and death, and worked long and hard to get doctors to see me as a person, not just a file number and prescription requirement. It made me realize that if I, a more informed law student, was having trouble communicating to my doctors to have my needs met then the average person must have an even more difficult time. For this reason, and many more, I decided to dedicate my life fighting for health care rights of others to help "humanize” the treatment process for those that do not have the benefit of advocates on their side. A scholarship from the SAMFund will help me achieve this mission by giving me the opportunity to work in Washington, DC on health care legislation and reform on Capitol Hill.”
