“Upon obtaining my medical degree, my goal is to specialize in the field of oncology and work with the medically underserved, low-income population residing in Atlanta, Georgia. In particular, I would like to work with African-American women, a group whose breast cancer survival rate has remained unchanged for twenty years, while the survival rate of Caucasian women has improved. The difference has been attributed to an inability among African-American women to access medical care and delays in receiving their diagnoses. Thus, my goal in working with this population will be to help my patients distinguish breast cancer facts from fiction and to integrate breast cancer education programs into community- and faith-based venues serving the urban poor.”
