Rochester, NY
survivor of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma
“Being a cancer survivor in the operatic sphere can be a tricky role to play…In my particular case, I will more than likely have to explain why there is a gap of a year on my otherwise well-stocked resume…Despite the considerable risk involved, I have decided that I must be open about my survivorship status in the operatic sphere...In our profession, vulnerability is only appreciated as a theatrical element, and every little sickness is hidden so as to avoid unwanted attention. I believe it is time to redefine cancer: We can't afford for it to be a shameful secret, while more and more young adults are diagnosed each year.”
