“I am not accustomed to asking for help in any realm of my life. I’ve always been very independent and driven when it comes to my dreams and goals. But now I find myself vulnerable and in need of a lift—and willing to ask for it… I do not want to allow this experience or risk of cancer in the future to dampen my original enthusiasm for my long-term goals—to practice medicine in an underserved community. I know this is not the easiest path—it doesn’t pay well and is emotionally draining. However, with the help of the SAMFund, I will be better equipped for these challenges… Just having these scholarships available gives me a sense of hope and serves as a reminder that I’m not the only young adult going through this.”
